Emphysematous cystitis (EC)

What is emphysematous cystitis?

This is an extremely rare type of cystitis, in which bladder infection occurs which causes building up of gases around bladder walls. If left untreated, it can be lethal as it may rupture the bladder and cause sepsis.

It commonly occurs when the bladder is infected with three types of bacteria:

  • Escherichia coli bacteria
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria
  • Types of Enterobacter bacteria

Actual pathology and causes of this disease are still poorly understood. In general, it can be cured with the help of antibiotics.
